Le French Gut Project

Accelerating microbiome science, a source of innovation for the medicine and food of tomorrow

National contribution to collect 100,000 faecal samples and associated nutritional and clinical data by 2027. Le French Gut is initiated by MetaGenoPolis-INRAE and supported by INRAE. AP-HP is the investigator of the project. Le French Gut aims at better understanding gut microbiota composition in healthy individuals and modelling and predicting changes in gut microbiota associated with diseases (diabetes, obesity, allergies, cancer, IBD, Parkinson, Alzheimer…)

100,000 French microbiomes in health and disease

  • Describe the gut microbiota of 100,000 individuals living in metropolitan France in order to ensure sufficient variability to characterise its heterogeneity
  • Develop important knowledge in terms of the diversity of the gut microbiota
  • Envisage, on the basis of this new knowledge, targeted prevention actions and a personalised medicine approach that will make it possible to improve the health of the population and reduce the costs associated with chronic diseases
  • To include France in the microbiome international initiative dynamic, MetaGenoPolis-INRAE (MGP) has initiated « Le French Gut » project with a medical and scientific consortium

The faeces of 100,000 French adult volunteers will be collected in order to study the link between the gut microbiota and chronic diseases as well as the link with neurodevelopmental disorders and neurological diseases.

An international dimension with the MMHP

This French project is part of a larger project called the « Million Microbiome of Humans Project » (MMHP).

This international MMHP project brings together several research institutes throughout the world (Karolinska Institute of Sweden, Shanghai National Clinical Research Center for Metabolic Diseases in China, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, Shenzhen BGI Research, etc.), including the MetaGenoPolis unit of INRAE.

MetaGenoPolis-INRAE is one of the members of the MMHP project and will contribute by bringing 100,000 French gut metagenomes.

The aim will be to build the world’s largest database of human microbiota and thus analyse 1 million microbial samples from the intestines, mouth, skin and reproductive system, for example.

MetaGenoPolis’ expertise

MetaGenoPolis (MGP) is an INRAE unit, expert in gut microbiome research applied to health and nutrition. MGP’s expertise in the analysis of the gut microbiome and its implications in health & nutrition has been widely recognized in the international scientific community since 2010. MGP was one of the first groups to elucidate the « second human genome » (European MetaHIT project) and to define the analysis standards.
